Drive from Manali to Jobra & Trek to Chika Campsite
Your Hampta Pass crossover adventure begins with a picturesque mountain drive from Manali towards Jobra, winding through fragrant pine, cedar and deodar forests along the Pir Panjal foothills. From the Jobra roadhead (9,800 ft), step onto the trail for a gentle 3 km hike towards Chika. Cross the rushing Rani Nallah stream via a sturdy wooden bridge and traverse boulder-speckled alpine pastures fringed with birch and dwarf rhododendrons.
Arrive at the lush Chika riverside camp by early afternoon. Settle into high-altitude tents, savor a warm lunch, and enjoy evening acclimatization under towering granite cliffs.
Chika to Balu Ka Ghera (Valley of Sand)
After a nutritious hot breakfast, begin the gradual ascent towards Balu Ka Ghera along the gushing course of the Rani River. The trail winds gently through expansive alpine valleys, carpeted meadows, and scenic rocky clearings. Depending on the season, the valley is blanketed with vivid wild rhododendrons and Himalayan wildflowers. You will encounter boulder-strewn sections and negotiate refreshing crystal-clear glacial stream crossings.
As the altitude climbs past 11,000 ft, tree lines recede, revealing massive snow-crowned granite walls and closer views of Indrasan Peak. By late afternoon, arrive at Balu Ka Ghera ('Heap of Sand') — a sheltered, sandy riverbed encircled by towering Himalayan peaks. Settle into high-altitude alpine tents, enjoy hot evening tea, and rest up for summit day.
Balu Ka Ghera to Hampta Pass Summit & Descent to Shea Goru
The centerpiece and most exhilarating day of the crossover trek! Start before dawn at 6:00 AM as the mountain breeze is calm and snow bridges remain firm. The ascent to Hampta Pass involves a sustained, steep climb through moraines, giant boulders, and seasonal snow patches.
At 14,065 ft, step onto the summit ridge for an astonishing visual revelation: behind you lies the lush, emerald Kullu Valley, while ahead opens up the stark, sun-bleached moonscape of Lahaul and Spiti. After savoring summit vistas of Mount Indrasan and Deo Tibba, commence the steep, careful descent towards the valley of Shea Goru ('Cold Street'). Cross gentle glacial streams to reach the picturesque campsite nestled next to crystalline waters.
Shea Goru to Chhatru & Excursion to Chandratal Lake
Start the morning with an exhilarating icy glacial river crossing near Shea Goru camp — a signature Hampta Pass rite of passage done under expert guide supervision. The trail traverses arid moraines down to Chhatru, a rugged roadhead where Pir Panjal meets the Spiti valley. At Chhatru, board 4x4 mountain vehicles for an excursion to the legendary Chandratal Lake ('Moon Lake') at 14,100 ft.
Walk along the sapphire-blue waters of Chandratal, framed by sheer Himalayan peaks. Return to Chhatru campsite by dusk for celebration dinner under a star-dusted Himalayan sky.
Road accessibility to Chandratal Lake is subject to weather clearance, road condition, and local administrative safety approvals.
Chhatru to Manali via Atal Tunnel
Relish a warm camp breakfast surrounded by the rugged, towering gorge walls of Chhatru before boarding your return vehicle. The drive winds through the Chandra River valley, passing the high-altitude Chandra-Bhaga river confluence before traversing the engineering marvel of the Atal Tunnel at Rohtang.
In minutes, watch the stark barren desert of Lahaul give way back to the verdant deodar and pine forests of Solang Valley. Arrive in Manali by early afternoon, concluding your unforgettable Hampta Pass crossover expedition with lifetime memories.

Practical Advice for Hampta Pass Crossover Trek
Layered Alpine Clothing
Weather on high mountain passes changes rapidly. Dress in 3-4 breathable layers including a thermal base, fleece jacket, and windproof outer shell.
Sturdy Trekking Boots
Wear broken-in ankle-support trekking boots with deep grip soles. Avoid brand-new footwear to prevent trail blisters.
Hydration & Acclimatization
Drink 3–4 litres of fluids daily. Gradual pacing and deep breathing help prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
Follow River Crossing Protocols
Unclip backpack waist belts during stream crossings and strictly follow guide instructions and human-chain formations.
Leave No Trace Principles
The pristine high-altitude meadows of Balu Ka Ghera and Shea Goru are ecologically sensitive. Pack out all non-biodegradable waste.
The cost of this journey depends on more than just the number of days. Your personalised package price is tailored according to:
- •Trek confirmation subject to fitness self-declaration and medical disclaimer.
- •Advance booking deposit secures campsite inventory, high-altitude gear, and guide ratio.
- •Cancellation charges apply based on notice period prior to trek batch start date.
- •Route alterations may be made by the trek leader for trekker safety during adverse weather.
Everything You Need to Know
